Resistance welding equipment

What to specify for a resistance-welding enquiry

A resistance-welding equipment brief should identify the component and joint before comparing machines. Supplier quotations are easier to assess when they address the same workpiece, tooling and production conditions.

Choose the joining arrangement from the component

Resistance welding covers several joining arrangements, including spot, seam, projection and butt welding. Start with the component, material stack, coatings, joint locations and production sequence. Ask the supplier to explain why its proposed arrangement fits that geometry. TWI's process overview provides background terminology; it does not qualify a specific machine for your component.

For sheet assemblies, show every layer and access to both sides of the weld location. For wire, mesh or framed products, provide the relevant dimensions, intersections and handling sequence. An equipment name or transformer rating alone does not describe the tooling and production system needed to make the part.

Separate power-system data from tooling and force

Request the model-specific welding control, power-system ratings and their reference conditions. Record electrode force and the available tooling arrangement separately from electrical ratings. The significance of a published current figure depends on what the source document measures; a resistance-welding value is not automatically equivalent to an arc-welding output-current rating.

Ask for the control functions, cooling package and facility requirements of the exact configuration. If values are stated for a family of machines, request the selected model's data. Identify missing units, conditions or document revisions before comparing offers. The directory leaves unknown values blank rather than using a larger machine's specifications for a smaller one.

Evaluate electrode access, fixtures and cooling

Attach drawings showing weld locations, part envelopes, access restrictions and any existing fixture interfaces. Ask the supplier to identify the proposed electrodes, holders and tooling and to explain who will design or supply the fixtures. If several variants share the machine, describe the changeovers and ask which adjustments or tooling sets are required.

Cooling and facility services should be part of the quotation boundary. Request the connection requirements and identify which equipment the buyer must supply. Record the assumptions behind any production-rate statement, including loading, unloading and part handling. Ask for the output of the whole line, including loading, unloading and handling, alongside the welding time.

Define trials and production records

Provide representative component samples, material specifications and the intended production conditions. Ask the supplier to record the proposed settings, electrode arrangement and machine configuration during a trial. Have qualified people define the acceptance method and the information needed to assess the component. Surface appearance alone does not address every possible acceptance requirement.

If production records matter, specify what must be recorded and how records should be retrieved. Ask whether monitoring, traceability, data export or integration is part of the offered control package. Keep these functions separate from optional software and from work your own team must perform. A generic statement of intelligent control is not an integration specification.

Make an automated-line quotation comparable

For mesh, frames or other repeated products, include feedstock dimensions, product variants, loading method and the desired handling boundary. Ask for the offered line equipment list, operator responsibilities and dependencies between stations. Compare the same product and work sequence across supplier proposals.

Separate base machine, fixtures, electrodes, cooling, handling equipment, installation, trials and training in the cost record. Ask for consumable identifiers and service support for the offered configuration. This category does not assume that a supplier's advertised maximum line speed applies to your product, or that an automated line has been tested under your acceptance criteria.

Published resistance and mesh welding profiles

One equipment guide is published in this category: the GWC-3200-C reinforcing-mesh line. It is a useful model for how to approach any mesh or grating line, starting from the mesh drawing, wire grade and feeding method rather than an advertised rows-per-minute figure.

Three manufacturer profiles cover resistance and mesh equipment, and they are not interchangeable. The Xinzhou profile covers resistance welding machines and application lines such as steel grating, reinforcing mesh and IBC frames. The Yuren profile centres on wire-mesh welding and related wire processing. The Yixin profile describes a sales and service business, so a quotation through it has to name the actual equipment maker and who commissions the line.

A filter-cage line is also a resistance application; the ZGTEK profile covers cage welding and ring forming, which is a narrower but similar buying problem. Nut and stud feeding belongs to adjacent equipment; the Wintures profile shows stud welding heads and feeders if your part needs fasteners attached.

Resistance lines are bought as systems, and their electrical demand is often the first site constraint: ask for the transformer rating, supply phase and peak demand, which the nameplate guide shows how to read. Welding transformers also carry a duty rating at a stated current, so ask for it at your own weld current; the duty-cycle guide explains how to compare those figures. For joining thin sheet without electrode marks, some buyers compare spot welding with laser welding; the trade-off is fit-up and fixturing rather than speed alone. For thin-wall tube seams, automated TIG or microplasma is the other common route, and the Eweld profile describes a supplier of those stations.

Electrodes, transformers, feeding and cutting are only part of the system; the tooling for each mesh size or part family often decides changeover time, and the fixtures guide explains how to assign that work. Define the acceptance run with your own wire and drawing, compare quotations on the same line boundary, and ask which certificates cover the electrical and machinery safety of the exact configuration. If the line is integrated with robots or handling cells, the welding automation category covers that part of the decision.

Buying questions

Can resistance-welding current use the arc-welder filters?

No automatic equivalence is assumed. Check what each published rating measures and its conditions. Compare model-specific resistance-welding data alongside force, tooling and control rather than applying an arc-welding current range to the entire system.

Does a line-speed claim describe my production output?

Only if its product, handling and operating assumptions match the proposed work sequence. Ask whether the figure is an estimate or a measured result and request a demonstration or acceptance proposal for your own product variants.
