Laser welding machines

What to specify for a laser-welding enquiry

Describe the workpiece and the complete laser system you need. Laser power is a separate specification from the output current used to compare arc-welding power sources.

Describe the joint before selecting laser power

Start a laser-welding enquiry with material grades, thicknesses, joint geometry, fit-up and representative drawings. Ask the supplier which source, head and operating arrangement it proposes and which document describes the exact configuration. Laser power is an optical-system specification; it should not be compared with the welding-current figures used for arc-welding machines.

If several parts are involved, explain the variation in dimensions and joint access. Include whether work will be handheld, mechanized or robotic. A series advertising several power options is not one machine offering every combination. Keep the offered power, source, head, cooling system and accessories together in the quotation record.

Buy the complete system and define its boundary

Ask for a configuration list covering the laser source, delivery components, welding head, controls, cooling, consumable equipment and any offered automation or enclosure. Identify which items are included, which are optional and which your facility must supply. If a wire feeder or cleaning mode is promoted, request the documentation and limitations for the actual offered package.

Record the required electrical supply, cooling and other facility interfaces. Ask whether installation, commissioning and training are included. A photograph of a compact cabinet does not explain the whole system boundary. Similarly, check the safety and suitability of a portable unit for your own workspace before buying.

Arrange a competent site safety assessment

Laser hazards require an assessment of the actual system and operating environment. Ask the supplier for the classification, safety documentation and proposed controls for the quoted configuration. A competent assessment should address the work area, access, enclosures or barriers, interlocks, maintenance and training as applicable. OSHA's laser-hazards material is a starting reference, not a ready-made approval of a machine or workspace.

Do not select protection or operating procedures solely from this directory. State who will assess the installation and which local requirements apply at the destination. A catalogue claim of being easy to use, or the presence of a supplied accessory, does not by itself establish that the complete installation is safe or compliant.

Ask for trials that match fit-up and finish requirements

Supply representative parts or a documented sample specification. Ask the manufacturer to explain the proposed trial, record the source and head configuration, and identify any preparation or fixture changes made during testing. Include the required weld locations and access constraints rather than relying on a demonstration of a different joint.

Agree with qualified people how acceptance will be evaluated for your component. Separate appearance, dimensional requirements and other specified properties. Keep the trial configuration linked to the offered system so that substitutions are visible. Published demonstration images show what the maker has welded; ask for a trial on your own parts.

Compare maintenance and delivery scope

Request the supplied documentation, spare-part identifiers, consumable list and maintenance responsibilities. Ask which service work can be performed at your site and which needs the supplier. Record software, training and support inclusions separately from equipment price. Clarify warranty exclusions, shipping responsibilities and what a service request must include.

Before selecting a quotation, resolve differences in source, head, cooling, accessories and installation boundary. If information is absent, leave it unknown and ask the supplier. Ask for model-specific documents for laser safety, approvals and the power needed for your material thickness.

Published laser welding guides and suppliers

The laser guides published so far span handheld units, a bench cell and a dedicated plate line. For manual work, compare the air-cooled SWAN series with the water-cooled SWAN HW family: cooling method, power steps and cabinet size are the first differences to pin down. For small precision parts, the IPW 0503S is an enclosed workstation with a 500 × 300 × 200 mm envelope. For heat-exchanger panels, the WEX 4020 is a dedicated pillow-plate line. Each of these pages quotes a power range that spans several laser source types, so the source named on the offer defines the machine; the laser cells guide explains source types, heads, enclosures and laser safety.

For robot or gantry cells, look at the welding automation category, which holds the RW 1510P robot platform and the GAN 2412 electrolyser welder.

Three manufacturer profiles cover laser welding. The Penta Laser profile spans handheld systems and dedicated platforms. The Mingtai profile focuses on motor stator, rotor and battery production stations. The Biaoke profile covers several laser processes across group companies, so the welding supplier has to be identified.

Laser joints are sensitive to fit-up, so ask how the part will be held; the fixtures guide covers who designs and owns that tooling. Ask which certificates apply to the exact configuration, and keep the comparison like-for-like by fixing the source, head and enclosure in every quote. A trial on your own material and joint is the most reliable acceptance step.

Buying questions

Is more laser power always the right choice?

The directory does not prescribe a power level from thickness alone. Ask the supplier to assess material, joint, fit-up and production needs for a specific configuration. Compare documented proposals and representative trials rather than a universal online chart.

Does a supplied safety accessory prove compliance?

No. Ask for documents that cover the complete installation as well as the supplied items. Request the system documentation and arrange competent assessment of the equipment, work area, operating tasks and applicable destination requirements.
