What to specify for a welding-automation enquiry

A welding automation request should define the complete cell and its responsibilities. A robot, positioner and welding power source are separate elements whose compatibility needs to be documented for the proposed system.

Specify a complete cell rather than only a robot

A welding automation brief should define the part family, welding process, joint locations, fixture concept and production sequence. A robot's payload or reach is only one part of the decision. Ask the integrator to show how the complete proposed system reaches the relevant welds and interfaces with the part-holding arrangement.

Identify the welding source, torch, positioners, fixtures, controls, sensing and handling equipment in the offer. State which components already exist at your site and ask for a compatibility assessment of those interfaces. Ask whether the cell has been integrated and proven on parts like yours, beyond the list of component brands.

Define the part family and the changeover task

Provide representative drawings, dimensions and material specifications for the parts the cell must handle. Describe differences between variants and the expected loading and unloading arrangements. Ask which fixtures are proposed, how a new variant is introduced and what programming or validation work is included.

If part location or fit-up varies, explain the variation and ask what the supplier proposes to address it. Ask the supplier to show how the sensor or seam tracking handles the variation in your parts. Request the documented capability of the offered configuration and a trial plan that addresses your own component rather than a generic demonstration part.

Compare cycle-time assumptions and cell boundaries

Ask for a breakdown of the proposed work sequence covering loading, positioning, welding, repositioning, unloading and any other operation included in the quote. Identify whether the number presented is an estimate, a measured trial result or a contractual proposal. Explain what availability, changeover and operator assumptions are included.

Keep robot motion time separate from complete-cell production output. If an offer depends on several operators, another station or an existing conveyor, record that dependency. Agree how production performance will be demonstrated for the actual part family. The directory does not turn an estimated takt time or promotional video into a verified production capacity.

Assign safety and integration responsibilities

Ask for the proposed cell boundary, safety-system documentation and responsibilities for the installation assessment. OSHA's robotics material describes industrial robot-system hazards and assessment considerations; it does not approve a particular layout. Competent review must address the delivered configuration, operating tasks, access and maintenance at your site.

Clarify who supplies guards, controls, electrical interfaces, fume-management arrangements and other facility services as applicable. Identify the controller and communication requirements for any production-system connection. Record training, emergency procedures and service access responsibilities in the project scope. Ask for compliance documents that cover the assembled cell as well as individual components.

Set acceptance, handover and maintenance expectations

Ask the integrator to propose acceptance checks for your drawings and production requirements. Keep weld assessment, cycle-time evaluation, changeover, software functions and operator training as separate items. Specify which records, manuals, backups and spare-part information should be delivered at handover.

For long-term operation, clarify support for the robot, power source and integration software and identify exclusions between their service providers. Ask who can modify programmes and who is responsible for reassessing a changed application. Compare quotations on the same system scope and responsibilities. This page offers a procurement structure; it does not claim that any listed integrator has independently demonstrated a complete solution.

Published automation guides and integrators

Two automation guides are published, both laser cells. The RW 1510P puts a robot, a positioner and a laser enclosure in one cell, so the open questions are your part size, how it is clamped and who programs it. The GAN 2412 is a gantry welder for square electrolysers, where fit, seam tracking and shielding on titanium or nickel have to be proven on your own cell design. The laser cells guide covers sources, heads and enclosure safety for both.

For arc-welding automation, the Kaierda profile covers industrial robots, arc power sources and robot welding systems; the useful question is how much integration work comes with the robot. The Chengyu profile covers longitudinal and circumferential seam stations and positioners, and the Jinfeng profile covers beam and box-column lines that combine cutting, assembly and welding. The Eweld profile is the place to start for microplasma and automated TIG on thin sections.

Special machines for other joining methods also sit here. The Mingtai profile covers laser stations for motor and battery production, and plastic joining cells appear on the Taisonic and Dongho profiles; the ultrasonic welding guide explains how those processes are specified.

Automation offers differ most in boundary and tooling. Fix who designs the fixtures, who writes and proves the programs, and what a representative part run must achieve before acceptance. Compare quotations line by line, including spare parts and on-site commissioning, and check that machinery and electrical certificates cover the assembled cell, not only the robot.

Buying questions

Can a robot specification prove welding suitability?

No. Reach and payload do not evaluate weld access, torch clearance, fixture design, process configuration or the integrated work sequence. Request a complete system proposal and assessment for the specified part family.

Who owns the delivered programmes and changes?

Ask for this in writing rather than relying on the controller brand. Ask for the programme and backup handover scope, permissions, service responsibilities and process for evaluating future application changes. Put these points in the project documentation before purchasing.
